DELF / DALF

2009 Session
This year the session is at the beginning of October 2009. See Cape Town Alliance Francaise.

More information about the DELF :

DELF/DALF is the official French proficiency test. In addition to allowing you to opt out of a French university’s language entrance exam, having the DELF/DALF is an additional advantage on your CV. If you are interested in obtaining an official document proclaiming your French language skills, join us now !

The DELF/DALF is the French equivalent of the English proficiency test TOEFL*, but the tests for these two languages are quite different. The DELF certification consists of multiple levels. Rather than a score, DELF candidates work to obtain one of six certifications : DELF A1, A2, B1, B2, and DALF C1, C2. Each of these certificates tests the four language proficiencies (reading, writing, listening and speaking).

The 6 diplomas are independent - you do not need to take all 6. A proficient speaker can, for example, start at whatever higher level he chooses.

For details about the DELF/DALF, including descriptions of the tests, you can visit the official DELF (in English) website : www.ciep.fr

1) Reading

This sections tests the candidates reading comprehension by presenting several short pieces of writing, followed by comprehension questions.

2 ) Writing

At the A1 level, the written section may consist of little more than a form or record with blanks the candidate is asked to fill in, or a sample of short written phrases (ie, a postcard). At the A2 level, the difficulty increases.

3) Understanding Listening

It tests the candidates listening comprehension with comprehension questions.

4 ) Speaking

At the A1, A2, this section consists of a guided conversation where the candidate is prompted by the examiner, a short exchange of information on a defined subject, and finally a role-play between the examiner and the candidate.

Scoring

The scoring of the DELF is identical at each level. Sections are scored out of 25, for a total of 100 marks per test. In order to pass, a minimum of 5/25 must be achieved in each section, and a minimum of 50/100 overall.
