Africa Remix

In the wake of the Africa Remix exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, the French cultural network wishes to share a part of this major exhibition of contemporary African art with the entire South Africa.
Africa Remix : Contemporary Art of a Continent is undoubtedly the largest exhibition on contemporary Africa Art ever showcased in Europe and in Africa. Reuniting 85 artists from 25 countries from Cape to Cairo, Africa Remix offers the full scope of contemporary creative media, from painting to design, from photography to sculpture and video. The exhibition explores three themes relating to African history : city and earth (urban versus rural) ; identity and history (the confrontation between tradition and modernity) and finally body and soul (religions, spirituality, emotion and sexuality).
The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and the Alliance Française network in South Africa have produced a parallel exhibition called 11 artists from Africa Remix - fringe touring exhibition, destined to tour throughout Southern Africa between September 2007 and May 2008. The collaboration of the artists, of Simon Njami (Exhibition commissary) and of the Johannesburg Art Gallery has been essential to this initiative.

Showcasing 11 artists from 9 African countries, this exhibition collects photographs, assemblages, design creations and video installations. Africa Remix-fringe touring exhibition offers a glimpse of the main exhibition to those who have not been able to make the trip to Johannesburg.
