The Rabbi from Tarsus is a bold and thought provoking look
At the life of the Apostle Paul. Dr. Philip Goble, himself a
Messianic jew, has made a sensitive and far reaching study of
Saul of Tarsus and succeeds, with great pathos and humour, in
Revealing to us a man who, having had his Messiah revealed
To him supernaturally, strove with every fibre of his being to
Bring this knowledge to all men as the Messiah has commanded.
The play is set in a dungeon in Rome at the end of Paul’s
Ministry. His only companion in that time was Luke, not
Visible on stage, but his hidden presence is felt throughout
The play as Paul speaks to him through a grating in the ceiling
Of his dilemma, whether to spend his last days on earth
Preparing his own defence against Nero, or to write a defence
For the believers whom he knew would be persecuted by the
Roman tyrant.
In the Rabbi from Tarsus Philip Goble has broken away from
The traditional view of Paul and gives us a picture of Paul the
Man, in a dungeon, his fears, his hopes, his indomitable faith
And cheerfulness in the face of imminent execution.
