A tribute to Picasso : A painting exhibition of works by local artists, inspired by Pablo Picasso.
In order to pay homage to Pablo Picasso and in collaboration with the exhibition “Picasso and Africa” at Iziko, the Alliance Française du Cap is organizing an exhibition of works done by Cape artists from 6th to 26th April at the Alliance Française Gallery (155, Loop Street).
More than 40 candidates, both professional and amateur, have submitted their paintings (a maximum of 3 per artist) in accordance with certain specific requirements ; 1m x 1m, 2 dimensional, etc.... The final selection will be made by 3 directors of Cape Galleries ::
Marilyn Martin, Director of Art Collections, Iziko South African NationalGallery.
Estelle Jacobs, Gallery Director A.V.A. - Association for Visual Arts
Patrice Boussekey, Director of « Gallery Patrice Boussekey »
This exhibition is also evidence of the influence of Picasso on South African artists who have been inspired by his works.
Still within the framework of "A Tribute to Picasso ", the Alliance Française du Cap is organizing a special Cineclub on 25th April at 7:00 pm in the Alliance Française hall (155, Loop Street), when documentaries about the artist will be screened : “Genèse du tableau Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” and "Portrait de Picasso" (in French only).
The famous film “The Mystery of Picasso” will also be shown on 20th April at 6:00 pm at the Labia Theatre (68 Orange Street). One of the greatest French filmmakers, Henri-Georges Clouzot, directed this film about his friend Pablo Picasso. He begins with a proposition :” If one were present at the conception of a great artistic masterpiece such as Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony, and could peek inside the mind of the artist, what would one see ?” This film is all in French and there are no subtitles. However there is very little dialogue as it is based on the painter’s visual analysis.
