Aimé Césaire est né en 1913 à la Martinique. A 26 ans, il publie Cahier d’un retour au pays natal, premier d’une série d’écrits qui allait faire de lui un des plus grands poètes de langue française du 20e siècle. Poème fondateur de l’oeuvre d’Aimé Césaire, le Cahier d’un retour au pays natal est fermement enraciné dans la réalité sociale, historique et géographique des Antilles françaises de l’entre-deux guerres. A cette époque, la France et plus généralement l’Europe régnaient en maîtres sur leurs empires coloniaux, notamment sur l’Afrique et les Antilles. Les seuls pays noirs libres étaient alors Haïti et le Libéria. A cette époque, les thèses racistes du diplomate et écrivain français, le comte de Gobineau, sur l’inégalité des races nourrissaient les théories du IIIe Reich. A cette époque, dans le Mississippi, Bessie Smith mourait d’une hémorragie devant un hôpital réservé aux blancs qui refusaient de la soigner. A cette époque, Joséphine Baker, « Reine de Paris », déposait sa ceinture de bananes. A cette époque, Aimé Césaire, Léopold Sedar Senghor et Léon Damas inventaient la « négritude » et rendaient à la femme et à l’homme noirs leur dignité d’êtres humains. Le Cahier d’un retour au pays natal s’inscrit dans cette réalité. « Ma bouche sera la bouche des malheurs qui n’ont point de bouche, ma voix, la liberté de celles qui s’affaissent au cachot du désespoir. »

Aimé Césaire was born in 1913 in Martinique. At the age of 26, he published Cahier d’un retour au pays natal (Notebook of a Return to My Native Land), the first of a series of texts of a poet who was to become one of the greatest French-speaking writers of the 20th century.

The production The production is the story of a journey, a journey through time and space. On the stage is a black figure, a man cut off from his own existence, exiled in the silence of his being, on the verge of an irreversible scream, making this journey back to his native land, to his humanity... Aimé Césaire’s poetry is as much made to be said and heard as it is to be read - its phrasing is vibrant, luxurious and generous, yet precise and cutting in its ever inventive music. Notebook of a Return to my Native Land is marked by the impatience of a 25 years old poet, a spirit of revolt before the unscalable prows of prejudice and stupidity, a strong hatred for the violence suffered by the black world as it is by all dominated peoples, a Jew, a “Kaffir”, a man from India, a man from Harlem who does not vote, a young man who already understood, in 1939, how miraculous a weapon poetry can be, a young man still ignorant of the new fraternity he was helping to found. « Mine will be the mouth of mouthless misfortunes, my voice, the freedom of those who founder in the dungeons of despair... »
