Panphobia
an exhibition of sculptures by Sybrand Wiechers
Sybrand Wiechers is a young award winning sculptor who is known for his conceptually brilliant and gently humorous works. For his next exhibition, Panphobia, he has created a series of ten statuettes to illustrate physical manifestations of common human anxieties, for instance, fear of the unknown, of embarrassment, of mortality, of the “other”, of futility, of the consequence, and of other daily worries. He calls these well-crafted works in steel and mixed media, “learning aids or mediation pieces to come to grips with one’s re-occurring phobias”. His inspiration is found in the depiction in rock art and ancient cultures of those objects which served to appease the troubled mind.
Sybrand’s exhibition can be viewed at the Alliance Française Pretoria from 5 June 2009 to 3 July 2009.
