Combining his talents as pianist, essayist, audiovisual producer and director of radio documentaries, Glenn Gould (1932-1982) mesmerized audiences with his brilliant, if often unorthodox, performances. It came as a shock, therefore, when he decided to abandon the stage at the age of thirty-two, and devote himself to studio experiments in sound and recording techniques. Nearly twenty-five years after his death, Gould remains a phenomenon in the world of classical music. This profile sheds new light on his life and work, while attempting to seize the intrinsic nature of his genius. Testimony from anonymous admirers whose lives he influenced, archival documents (both audio and visual) and written material combine to reveal the inner essence of this unique Canadian prodigy.
