EXPOSITION, 7 AOUT 2008 : Loeritha Saayman, vernissage à 19 :30 à l’Alliance Française de Pretoria (99, River Street, Sunnyside, Pretoria)

Loeritha Saayman, artiste dont le travail est basé sur l’utilisation de médias combinés, a étudié les beaux arts à l’UNISA. Elle est née et a grandi dans la province du Mpumalanga avant que sa famille ne s’installe dans le Gauteng. Sa décision d’entamer une carrière artistique s’est faite lors de visites de galeries et musées d’art dans le monde entier. Elle a ensuite approfondi sa connaissance de l’histoire de l’art et de l’art contemporain sur l’ensemble de la planète au cours des neuf années passées à parcourir le monde lorsqu’elle était hôtesse de l’air.

A l’obtention de son diplôme en 1999, elle a ouvert le Brooklyn Fine Art Studio à Pretoria où elle enseigne le dessin et la peinture. Au fur et à mesure, le nombre d’expositions augmentant rapidement, elle a dû privilégier la création et diminuer l’enseignement, mais une poignée d’étudiants a refusé que leurs classes s’arrêtent, donnant à Loeritha des moments privilégiés pour l’inspiration en compagnie de gens partageant sa passion pour l’art.

Loeritha a participé à diverses expositions collectives et compétitions artistiques au cours des huit dernières années, et a présenté son travail en solo pour la première fois en 2003. Le Pretoria Art Museum, le Polokwane Art Museum et de nombreuses collections privées possèdent aujourd’hui des ouvres de Loeritha.

Le caractère imprévisible de l’expérimentation a toujours passionné Loeritha, et la majeure partie de son œuvre fait appels à différents médias combinés, mélangeant ainsi la peinture à l’huile traditionnelle et le dessin aux techniques digitales les plus récentes. Elle est convaincue que le dessin et la peinture sont irremplaçables, qu’ils forment la marque d’un individu. Son travail s’articule autour d’un thème spécifique et elle utilise le titre de chaque œuvre comme indice pour que le public puisse décoder ses symboles et métaphores.

Sa prochaine exposition à l’Alliance Française, intitulée DIY, est un travail sur différents médias présentant des objets communs juxtaposés à d’autres n’ayant aucun rapport apparent, et placés dans des arrière-plans ambigus.

Loeritha Saayman is a mixed media artist who studied fine arts at UNISA. She was born and grew up in the Mapumulanga area and only became part of the city life in her last year of school, when her family moved to Gauteng. Inspiration to pursue a career in art came with her visits to art museums and galleries all over the world. She had the opportunity to experience international art history and contemporary art at first hand while she worked as a flight attendant for nine years.

On completion of her degree in 1999, she opened the Brooklyn Fine Art Studio in Pretoria where she teaches drawing and painting. With her ever-increasing involvement in group exhibitions and commissions, the art classes had to make way for more creative time needed to fulfill this pursuit. Yet a handful of students who refused to let go of their classes, offer Loeritha inspirational time with people who have a similar passion and interest in art.

Loeritha took part in several art competitions and group exhibitions over the last eight years and had her first solo exhibition in 2003. Today she has art works in the permanent collection of the Pretoria Art Museum, Polokwane Art Museum and numerous private collections.

The unknown outcome of experimentation has always been a challenge for Loeritha and most of her work is done in mixed media where she combines traditional oil painting and drawing with contemporary digital processes. On the contrary, she still believes in the traditional mediums of painting and drawing and the uniqueness of a mark that is made by an individual. Her works are well planned along a specific concept or theme and she uses the title of the work as a clue to the viewer who has to decode the work through symbols and metaphors.

The exhibition at Alliance Française, entitled DIY, will comprise of mixed media works which portray mundane objects often juxtaposed with other non-relevant objects and placed in ambiguous settings.
