MAGIC MALIK ORCHESTRA s’est produit le samedi 28 mars au Botswana Craft, dans le cadre du FESTIVAL DE MAITISONG 2009
Malik Mezzadri est très certainement l’un des personnages les plus enthousiasmants de la scène Jazz française et le seul artiste vivant à avoir porté l’art de la flûte à un tel niveau de reconnaissance internationale.
Né à Abidjan, élevé en Guadeloupe (où il prend ses premières leçons de flûte à bec et traversière), il intègre le Conservatoire de Marseille où il a l’occasion de jouer avec le groupe de funk Human Spirit (au sein duquel il restera dix ans).
Chantre de « la culture ouverte » (comme il le dit lui-même), il multiplie les collaborations : Julien Lourau, Susheela Raman, -M-, Steve Coleman, Ludovic « St Germain » Navarre, Asa, pour n’en citer que quelques uns. En plus d’une technicité étourdissante, la « Magic Touch » est caractérisée par le « growl », tradition ancestrale et africaine consistant à accompagner le son d’un instrument (ou une mélodie) de cris, grognements et autres chantonnements.
En outre de ses diverses collaborations, c’est avec la formule « Magic Malik Orchestra » (dont le sixième et dernier album, « Saoule », est sorti le 28 Août dernier) que Malik impose sa réputation de Jazzman repoussant les limites de la modernité et totalement ouvert à la fusion d’autres ingrédient musicaux. Quelques grammes d’électricité, des interventions Rap, des bidouillages de machines, des influences « funk » donc afro-caraïbes, et bien d’autres surprises…
C’est avec son orchestre que Malik confirme la voie nouvelle qu’il a lui-même ouverte et dont il est devenu le chef de file.
Magic Malik has started his tour of Southern Africa : with Gaborone, 28 March, 2009 at Botswana Craft. He has performing in : Windhoek, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Maseru, Durban and Cape Town.

He was born in Côte d’Ivoire, brought up in the Caribbean island of “Guadeloupe” and later came to France to attend the conservatoire of music of Marseilles where he had the occasion of playing with the renowned funk band “Human Spirit”.

Together with a breathtaking mastery of his instrument, Malik’s “Magic touch” is characterized by the “growl”, a traditional African technique that associates screaming, growling or humming to the sound of the instrument itself. Apart from his many collaborations, it is with the « Magic Malik Orchestra » formula that Malik has gained international recognition as a most brilliant jazzman, pushing the limits of modernity and always open to the fusion of other musical genres : an once of electrical sound here, some hip-hop there, a little fiddling with machines, some funk and afro-Caribbean influences…
With his own orchestra, Malik keeps on paving the way to a new musical world to which he is both the pioneer and the leader.”
