Fethi Tabet was born in Algeria in the early fifties. He realized very young that music was his chief passion and quickly became a reference of the French musical scene, then of the international one, as instrument-maker, percussionist and player of a the traditional Arabic luth, the “Oud”. His music is greatly inspired by a wide variety of influences, be it French, Spanish, Moroccan or sub-Saharian, thus creating warm, powerful and colorful compositions. His inimitable voice allows him to portray life with emotion and humour, traveling through different musical styles from North to Sub-Saharian Africa, as well as South America and the Mediterranean. As part of their South African tour, we are happy to invite you to a fantastic concert based on warm melodies using the oud, the guitar, the violin, saxophones, and based on powerful percussions and voices. On that occasion, Fethi Tabet and his seven musicians will play with a South-African combo, Strings ‘n Skins, featuring Greg Hadjiyorki Georgiades and Ashish Joshi. Strings ’n Skins play rhythmical interpretations of North African and South African improvisational styles. Their Afro-Asian hybrid beats are played on traditional instruments, such as the Indian percussive drums (Tabla & Dhol), Egyptian (Darbukah) and African (Djembe), played by Ashish, and the North African fretless lute (Oud), Bouzouki and nylon string Flamenco guitar, played by Greg. Their CD Strings ’n Skins was voted best CD of the year by Pretoria News readers. They have played extensively around South Africa and abroad where audiences have been thrilled by their driving rhythms and catchy melodies.

Pour la première fois, l’Alliance Française de Pretoria est en mesure d’organiser la Fête de la Musique, comme chaque année en France depuis vingt ans. Cet événement sera donc organisé à l’Alliance, à Sunnyside, le samedi 21 juin, à partir de 14H. Le principe est très simple : le premier jour de l’été en France, tous les mélomanes peuvent passer leur journée à écouter ou jouer de la musique, soit dans la rue ou dans la cadre de concerts organisés, rencontrer des musiciens, jouer ou écouter de la musique improvisée ou déjà composée, pour le plus grand plaisir des auditeurs, et tout cela est gratuit ! Plusieurs groupes se succèderont sur la scène extérieure, suivis par des séances improvisées entre tous les musiciens, amateurs ou confirmés, qui souhaiteront nous rejoindre – et n’oubliez pas vos instruments !!

Charl du Plessis est l’un des plus grands musiciens jazz / classique d’Afrique du Sud, et il s’est progressivement imposé comme l’un des pianistes incontournables de la scène sud-africaine.

Originaire de Bloemfontein, Charl a étudié le piano avec Annaliza Swart, Francois Rautenbach et Johan Cromhout, puis a suivi des études de musicologie à l’Université de Pretoria, sous la direction du professeur Joseph Stanford. Charl a ensuite commencé sa carrière musicale aux côtés du célèbre artiste sud-africain Nataniël.

En tant que pianiste de Jazz, Charl du Plessis a été l’un des gagnants de la plus prestigieuse compétition de piano jazz sud-africaine. Il a sorti son premier album, « Trio », qui mêle ses compositions à des standards revisités, en 2007. Charl se produit de manière régulière partout dans le pays, et tente chaque fois d’offrir un jazz accessible au plus grand public. Il souhaite ainsi réconcilier le termes « jazz » et « commercial », tout en gardant à cette forme d’expression musicale son intégrité artistique.

Charl a déjà composé les musiques de deux films et a entamé un doctorat de musicologie à l’Université de Pretoria.

La formation sud-africaine Strings ‘n Skins (« world music »), portée par Greg Hadjiyorki Georgiades et Ashish Joshi. Strings ‘n Skins a développé un répertoire dont les influences prennent leur source en Afrique du Nord et en Afrique sub-saharienne, leur laissant toujours une place pour l’improvisation. Leurs créations ne font qu’appel à des instruments acoustiques traditionnels, comme les percussions indiennes (tabla, dhol), égyptiennes (darbuka) ou africaines (djembe) pour Ashish, et le oud (luth nord-africain), le bouzouki ou les guitares pour Greg. Le batteur Wynand Van Den Walt sera aussi sur scène pour ce concert. Leur premier CD a reçu le prix du meilleur album de l’année par les lecteurs de Pretoria News. Ils ont déjà joué dans l’ensemble de l’Afrique du Sud, ainsi qu’à l’étranger, où leurs mélodies et rythmes envoûtants ont enchanté leur public.

For the first time, the Alliance Française in Pretoria is celebrating, like every year in France for the past twenty years, the “Fête de la Musique” (Celebration of Music). This special event will be held at our premises, in Sunnyside, on Saturday 21 June, from 2 pm onwards. The principle is simple : on the first day of summer in France, everybody who likes music can play in the streets or at organised concerts, meet musicians, play improvised or composed music – for the happy listeners who want to celebrate music, and everything is free ! Different groups will perform on our outdoor stage, followed by “jam sessions” between all musicians who want to take part, amateurs or professionals – make sure you bring your instruments !!

Charl du Plessis is one of the top jazz, popular and classical musicians in South Africa today, establishing himself as a sought after performer and pianist.

Originally from Bloemfontein, South Africa he studied piano with Annaliza Swart, Francois Rautenbach and Johan Cromhout. He matriculated at Grey College where he founded and directed the Indomitus vocal ensemble.After completing a BMus, BMus (Hons) and MMus degrees in classical piano performance under the direction of Prof Joseph Stanford at the University of Pretoria Charl started a career in popular entertainment as the official accompanist for well-known South African singer/entertainer Nataniël.

Charl du Plessis appears in over 80 stage productions per year as the exclusive pianist for Nataniël and has appeared as pianist on five of his albums. Charl has been a lecturer in jazz piano at the University of Pretoria since 2004. Under his guidance many performing jazz students have launched successful performing careers.

During his years of study in Pretoria Charl du Plessis won numerous of the most prestigious awards, bursaries and prizes in South Africa from UNISA, SAMRO, FAK and U.P.

Charl du Plessis made his classical recital debut in the USA in 1999 as well as his Swiss recital debut in the same year. He made his U.K recital debut in 2005 and made his Royal Albert Hall debut in the same year when he, shared the stage with Nataniël.

As jazz pianist Charl du Plessis was a prizewinner in South Africa’s most prestigious competition for jazz pianists. He released his first jazz album in 2007. This album named TRIO features original music by him as well as new arrangements of covers. Charl performs throughout South Africa as sought after performer of jazz music accessible to the masses. He is articulate in his pursuit of establishing commercial jazz music as a respected art form with integrity.

Charl du Plessis completed two commissioned scores for film and is currently reading for his Doctorate in Music at the University of Pretoria.

Nous sommes heureux d’annoncer la tournée sud-africaine du duo « Clockwise », basé à New York, dont les membres, le violoniste Marc Uys et la harpiste Jacqueline Kerrod, se sont fait connaître en explorant et jouant un répertoire contemporain aux côtés de pièces plus connues du grand public.

Une œuvre centrale de leur programme reste la Fantaisie pour Violon et Harpe Opus 124, du compositeur Camille St Saëns, une pièce maîtresse audacieuse pour les deux instruments, où des passages vifs et brillants laissent la place au lyrisme nostalgique. Les amateurs peuvent aussi découvrir la composition très créative de John Cale (« Six Melodies for Violin and Keyboard, avec la transcription du piano vers la harpe), la « Suite pour violon et harpe » de Thomas Raina ou encore la « Sonate pour Harpe Opus 30 » du compositeur français Marcel Tournier (1879-1951), lui-même harpiste confirmé.

Marc Uys s’est fait connaître dans les milieux musicaux comme fondateur et leader du Quartet Sondonga, et comme l’un des premiers violons les plus accomplis. Depuis le début 2007, il est intervenu sur trois continents en jouant dans des formations de musique de chambre, comme premier violon ou directeur musical. Il joue sur un superbe instrument du 18ème siècle, généreux prêt de la fondation Lindbergh. Originaire de Johannesbourg, Jacqueline Kerrod vit à New York depuis 9 ans où elle se produit régulièrement au sein d’orchestres comme le New York Philharmonic Orchestra et l’ Opéra de New York City. Elle a fait ses débuts avec la « Chamber Music Society » (Lincoln Center) et est membre fondatrice de MAYA. Sa récente collaboration avec Uys promet des moments fantastiques, pour le public sud-africain comme étranger.

We are delighted to announce an extensive South African tour by the ground-breaking, New York based duo Clockwise, whose members, violinist Marc Uys and harpist Jacqueline Kerrod, have each earned reputations for exploring and performing fresh, new repertoire alongside crowd pulling classical standards.

A central work in their programme is Camille Saint-Saëns’s Fantasy for Violin and Harp Opus 124, a bravura showpiece for both instruments that alternates brilliant passages with dreamy, nostalgic lyricism. Enthusiasts can also look forward to discovering John Cage’s highly creative Six Melodies for Violin and Keyboard (transcribed for harp) or Thomas Rajna’s atmospheric Suite for Violin and Harp, and the delightful Sonatine for Harp Opus 30 by the French composer, Marcel Tournier (1879 – 1951), himself a noted harpist.

Uys has deservedly built a loyal following in local music circles, both as the founder and leader of the now sadly defunct Sontonga Quartet and as one of the country’s most accomplished violin soloists. Since the beginning of 2007, he has performed as soloist, chamber musician and concert master on three continents. He plays a fine 18th century Italian instrument on generous loan from the Lindbergh Arts Foundation. Originally hailing from Johannesburg, Kerrod has been living in New York for the past nine years where she regularly performs with orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and New York City Opera. She made her debut with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in 2007 and is a founding member of MAYA. Her latest collaboration with Uys promises a stimulating time ahead for music audiences here and abroad.

SHARP ! », esplanade du State Theatre, à 16:00, Pretoria (centre ville, Pretorius Street), dans le cadre du festival culturel international de Tshwane (27 août au 7 septembre 2008, www.stathetheatre.co.za ou www.computicket.co.za) et Carnaval de Johannesbourg (6 septembre).

Le projet « Sharp ! Sharp » est né au début de l’année 2007, après la tournée du spectacle précédent, « Nhanssalà » (projet franco-mozambicain), dans le réseau des Alliances Françaises d’Afrique du Sud en 2005, à l’initiative de l’association française « Lutherie Urbaine » (Paris). Le principe de ce projet est simple : impliquer des jeunes issus de milieux socio-culturels défavorisés dans un projet artistique de longue haleine (de 18 à 24 mois) comprenant création d’instruments et mise en place d’un répertoire original composé par le créateur et directeur de l’association Lutherie Urbaine (www.lutherieurbaine.com), le batteur / percussionniste et compositeur Jean-Louis Mechiali. En raison des coûts élevés des instruments de musique, Jean-Louis a eu une idée originale pour redonner espoir à ces jeunes défavorisés : créer et fabriquer des instruments à partir de matériaux de récupération recyclés, pour un résultat aussi insolite que de qualité… Pour le projet sud-africain, nous avons décidé de travailler avec des jeunes des townships de Mamelodi et de Soweto, grâce à des partenariats avec des associations locales (Calthem à Mamelodi et Mountain of Hope à Soweto). Nous avons aussi voulu ajouter à la partie musicale un volet danse urbaine contemporaine (Pantsula et Gum Boots) afin d’enrichir la création finale. Le projet est basé sur des résidences croisées d’artistes en France et en Afrique du Sud, ainsi que sur des ateliers hebdomadaires animés par des artistes sud-africains, Carlo Mombelli pour la musique (www.carlomombelli.com) et Moeketsi Koena (www.jazzart.co.za/koena.htm) pour la danse. « Sharp ! Sharp ! » rassemble environ 40 jeunes des townships de Mamelodi et de Soweto. Ce concert sera la première manifestation publique de ce projet, après plus d’un an de travail, et sera suivi par une parade déambulatoire à l’occasion du carnaval de Johannesbourg début septembre. Sa version finale sera présentée en France et dans le Gauteng début 2009, et sera probablement l’objet d’une nouvelle tournée dans le réseau des Alliances d’Afrique du Sud aux alentours du mois de mai 2009. Ce projet est le fruit d’un financement du Conseil Général d’Ile de France, du département Arts and Culture de la province du Gauteng, de l’Institut Français d’Afrique du Sud (IFAS) et de l’Alliance Française de Pretoria.

The “Sharp ! Sharp ! Project was born at the beginning of 2007, after the tour of the previous, similar project called “Nhanssalà” (Franco-Mozambican project), in the South-African Alliance Française network in 2005, at the initiative of the French association “Lutherie Urbaine” (urban instrument makers). The principle of this project is quite simple : to commit young people coming from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to a long artistic project (18 to 24 months), including the creation of musical instruments on which these youngsters will play the original composition by the creator and director of the association “Lutherie Urbaine”, drummer / percussionist and composer Jean-Louis Mechiali. Given the high prices of all musical instruments, Jean-Louis had an original idea to give hope to these disadvantaged children : create and build instruments out of recycled waste material, for a result that is as amazing as unheard-of, and of surprising musical quality… For this South-African project, we have decided to work with youth from the Soweto and Mamelodi townships, thanks to partnerships with local associations (Calthem in Mamelodi and Mountain of Hope in Soweto). We also wished to add to the music side an urban, contemporary dance element (Pantsula and Gum Boots) so as to enrich the final creation. The project is based on alternating artists’ residences between South Africa and France, as well as on weekly workshops led by South-African artists, Carlo Mombelli for music (www.carlomombelli.com) and Moeketsi Koena (www.jazzart.co.za/koena.htm) for dance. « Sharp ! Sharp ! » gathers together around 40 youngsters coming from Mamelodi and Soweto townships. This concert will be the first public viewing of our project, after more than one year of work, and will also be followed by a parade on the occasion of the Johanneburg festival, in early September. The final version will be presented both in France and in Gauteng at the beginning of year 2009, and will probably be followed by a new tour of the Alliances Françaises in South-Africa. The project has been financially supported by the Paris Region local government, the Gauteng Arts and Culture department, the French Institute in South Africa (IFAS) and the Alliance Française de Pretoria.

Barbara Marcinkowska (France), Berthine Van Schoor and Cello Students with Annalien Ball (piano).

Barbara Marcinkowska, a student of the great French cellist Andre Navarra, is known as a world authority on the French cello school. In addition to pursuing an international solo career, she has written many books on pedagogy and has made numerous recordings, especially of the solo cello repertoire.

She is currently Professor at the conservatoire in Versailles and lives in Paris.

The programme consist of cello/piano works, cello duets and trios by Barrière, Breval, Boismortier, Faure, Saint-Saens, Ravel and Debussy as well as Villa-Lobos : Bachianas Brasileiras Nº1 for 12 cellos.
