« Il était une fois, il ya très longtemps, une jolie jeune femme, du nom de Rain, qui vivait dans le ciel. En guise de ceinture, elle portait un arc-en-ciel. Un jour, Rain épousa un homme nommé Flame et ils eurent ensemble trois belles jeunes filles. » Ainsi commence la très ancienne histoire du peuple San. Une histoire qui nous raconte comment les trois filles, ignorant les recommandations de leur mère, quittèrent leur maison céleste pour visiter le royaume terrestre. Elles furent accompagnées dans leur voyage par leur plus jeune frère, Son-Eib, mais aussi par Wolf, qui s’est déguisé pour tromper la confiance des filles du ciel. Il s’en suit alors une épopée mouvementée, contée selon une mise en scène qui intègre à la narration musique, danse, chants, mimes et marionnettes. Rain est un spectale fascinant qui rend hommage à l’héritage culturel de l’une des plus anciennes tribus d’Afrique du Sud et qui constitue une brillante démonstration de l’utilisation des techniques de narration les plus originales et les plus diverses. Rain est joué en Zulu, en Anglais et en Français.

“Rain was once a beautiful woman who lived long ago in the sky. For a girdle she wore a Rainbow. Rain married Flame and together they had three beautiful daughters....” So begins the ancient story of the San people, which tells how the daughters of Rain leave their home in the sky, against their mother’s wishes, to visit the earth below. They are accompanied by their younger brother Son-eib and Wolf, who has disguised his wicked heart and mesmerized the sky-girls into believing that he will take care of them. The dramatic story unfolds, with dance, song, music, puppetry and mime accompanying narration and dialogue. Rain is an inspiring production. Not only does it pay homage to the cultural heritage of one of the most ancient tribe of Southern Africa, but also introduces audiences to fascinating musical sounds and a wide range of story telling techniques.
The founders of Madcaps, established performers Wendy Nell and Gisele Turner, are joined by ethnomusicologist Sazi Dlamini and experienced actress, singer and puppeteer Mpume Mthombene.
