TEF

THE T.E.F. a new tool to measure and to get formal recognition of your French language skills !

- You want to add an independent evaluation of your ability to communicate in French to your résumé : the TEF covers the widest range of levels

T.E.F. (Test d’évaluation de français) This test was conceived and is administered by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris (CCIP). It is not a diploma. It evaluates, at a given moment, a candidate’s ability to communicate in French, from an elementary level up to advanced. It is based on research carried out by the Commission du Conseil de l’Europe into various levels of language proficiency and their harmonisation, as well as on studies by the Council of Teaching of Foreign Languages. The creation and correction of the tests take place in Paris (apart from the oral expression elements which are evaluated by the Alliance Française of Cape Town). The results are presented to the candidate with personalised comments. The results are valid for one year. It is possible to sit the obligatory parts of the exam during one session and the optional parts during another session as long as all parts are completed within one year. If more than a year goes past before all the parts are completed, then the test must be taken again in its entirety.

Description

3 obligatory elements : Each in the form of a Multiple Choice Questionnaire, with 4 proposed answers for each question.
- Written Comprehension (50 questions - 1 hour)
- Oral Comprehension (60 questions - 40 minutes)
- Vocabulary and structure (40 questions - 30 minutes) NB : The method of scoring eliminates the chances of getting a good result by sheer guesswork : 3 points are given for a correct answer, 0 points if no answer is proposed, and -1 points for a wrong answer.

2 optional elements :
- Written Expression (2 texts to be produced - 1 hour)
- Oral Expression (2 subjects - 35 minutes, preparation time included)

Pertinence of the TEF

- Candidates may decide to measure their linguistic ability regularly or from time to time with the TEF.
- An employer may choose candidates using this evaluation as a reliable, independent and recognised standard.
- Foreigners wishing to obtain their permanent residence visa as a skilled worker in Canada must present a dossier and obtain 75 points out of a possible 100 for various criteria in order to be considered. Linguistic ability accounts for 24 points, of which 16 can be obtained in French if this language is chosen as the first official language, or else 8 points where it is the candidate’s second official language. The TEF is the only test recognised by Citizenship and Immigration Canada as a means of evaluating French language skills and thus of obtaining points in this category.

Timetable TEF exam may be organized in 2 to 3 weeks from the date registration has been made and all fees paid by the candidate.
