Cape guitarist and composer Derek Gripper has released four CDs of original Cape music, “Ayo” and “Blomdoorns” for solo guitar, “Sagtevlei” for strings, and “Ale !x” (a trio recording with Alex van Heerden and Brydon Bolton). He has also recorded a Bach album called “Prayers and Dances”.
His music is New Cape music, a contemporary compositional language that fuses contemporary African guitar with New Volk. Dubbed “an open-minded fusion of classical and indigenous” and a “new insight in South African and its music” Derek’s shows, presented in countries around the world, are recitals, solo improvisations, story-telling, and a seductive ritual of internal trance and musical absorption.
Derek will present his solo show at a rare Cape Town appearance at the Alliance Française at 155 Loop Street, Cape Town 8001 Tel : (021) 423 5699. The show will mark the release of his third solo album “Kai Kai.” For more information www.derekgripper.com
