The Eastern Cape’s principal Alliance française , Port Elizabeth, was founded in 1960. It is part of a network of 19 Alliances in South Africa, five with French directors in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cap Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.
The Alliance française of Port Elizabeth is a franco-South African non-profit-making organisation and functions through a local committee of 17 people, of whom 10 are South African. The chairperson is Françoise Gabriel and the Treasurer, Mr Gerald Henderson, is also the Honorary French Consul. Mr Christophe Freschi, the Director, was appointed by the French Embassy for 3 years. Our Alliance includes 450 students and 550 members.
The Alliance occupies a beautiful house in the Central Area of PE, which was bought with the help of the French Embassy.
The activities of the Alliance include :
· French courses at various levels
· Support of teaching of French in the local schools
· Organization of socio-cultural activities :
concerts, plays, films, exhibitions, public lectures, etc.
·The welcoming of all French-speaking families who settle in Port Elizabeth. The Alliance Française is also a French consular agency and works in partnership with PE ACCUEIL Association (President : Babette Jackson www.portelizabethaccueil.org.za)
Today, the Alliance of Port Elizabeth works with the Culture and Art Department of the NMMM :
· to promote French and South African artists and help them to work together
· to give to all South-Africans the opportunity to see internationally recognised performances
· To better mutual comprehension between France and South Africa.

L’Alliance Française de Port Elizabeth est une organisation Franco-Sud Africaine à but non lucratif, et ses fonctions sont assurées par un comité de 17 personnes, dont 10 sont Sud Africaines. La présidente est Mme Françoise Gabriel et le trésorier, M. Gerald Henderson, est aussi le consul honoraire de France. M. Christophe Freschi, le directeur français de notre Alliance, a été nommé par l’Ambassade de France en septembre 2005 pour une durée de 3 ans. Notre Alliance compte 400 étudiants qui apprennent le français et 550 membres.
L’Alliance Française occupe une magnifique maison au coeur de Port Elizabeth, qui a été acheté avec l’aide de l’Ambassade de France.
Les activités assurées par l’Alliance incluent :
- des cours de français à des niveaux variés,
- le soutien à des cours de français dans des écoles locales,
- l’organisation d’activités socio-culturelles : concerts, jeux, films, expositions, conférences, etc.
- l’accueil de tous les familles francophones qui s’installent à Port Elizabeth. L’Alliance Française est également agence consulaire de France et travaille en lien avec PE ACCUEIL (Présidente : Babette Jackson www.portelizabethaccueil.org.za)
Aujourd’hui, L’Alliance Française de Port Elizabeth travaille avec le département de la Culture et des Arts de NMMM (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality) :
- pour promouvoir les artistes français et sud africains et les aider à travailler ensemble,
- pour donner la possibilité à tous les Sud Africains de voir les spectacles internationallement reconnus,
- pour améliorer la compréhension mutuelle entre la France et l’Afrique du Sud.
