Born in Rennes (Brittany, France) on the initiative of charismatic London-born French singer/MC Jay Ree, the band City Kay is made of 6 young professional musicians who gathered around a common passion for authentic and inspired Reggae music.
Influenced by the sheer groove of the legendary 70-80's Jamaican and English productions, City Kay's sound remains in the tradition of the Golden Age Reggae, carried to the higher grounds by original modern arrangements. Their spirit is poetic, positive, realistic and militant, with enlightened horn-like voices and riddims.
On the phonographic production side (City Kay has auto-released a first album called Preoccupations), City Kay's vibe is heavy and moist, like a tropical night in Kingston, with a strong hint of Dub. But there's no doubt stage is the best plate-form to savour the Roots Rock Reggae fest City Kay became masters of, and it's no wonder why their sound touches and thrill wide audiences from young curious cats to Reggae old disciples…

THE TREE :
All members of society embrace and participate in ceremonies and events with joy and pride ; young, and old, rich and poor. Umhlanga (the Reed Dance) registers support by the Swazi maidens for the Indlovukazi (Queen Mother) ; Incwala is in essence a ceremony which reconfirms the King's powers ; the older women (Lustango bo Make) gather to show commitment to the Indlovukazi ; traditional weddings are practiced, and the King's fields are weeded by the Emabutfo (regiments). These photos reflect a living heritage rich with imagery.

Born in the United Kingdom, Steve Hall took up photography whilst studying architecture. After spells in Zimbabwe and Botswana, he has been resident in Swaziland since 1982 and became a citizen of that country in 1994. While he pursues a variety of photographic projects, he has amassed an extensive library of images of Swazi culture and tradition, and other aspects of Swaziland in both color and black and white format.

“There is always such pride and spirit exhibited by those participating in the various activities and events – you can feel the enjoyment. Apart from the odd watch and pair of trainers, these images could be a hundred years old, such is the strength and endurance of Swazi Culture.”

LISTE DES PHOTOGRAPHIES de Steve HALL

1.
